Ivor retired from the House of Commons at the 2005 General Election having been the Member of Parliament for Hove & Portslade  from 1997 and the Under Secretary of State (Minister for Veterans) at the Ministry of Defence. His career at Westminster also involved being the PPS to the Leader of the House for 3 years and then moving to the Government Whips office with an attachment to the Foreign & Commonwealth Office.

On leaving the House he set up Ivor Caplin Consultancy Ltd. Since 2005 he has operated this company which deals with high level political public affairs and general business and reputational matters. This has continued to bring him into regular contact with both politicians and officials both from the UK and abroad.

A long standing supporter of the Terrence Higgins Trust he became the Chair of the new Advisory Board for THT in 2016. He joined the Trustees of Concordia UK in 2017 and in 2018 became the National Chair of the Jewish Labour Movement.

He is a keen golfer as well as being a lifelong supporter of Brighton & Hove Albion FC and a member of the team that developed the award winning AMEX stadium in Brighton. Other interests include the theatre cinema and cooking.
