Hosted by Volunteers for Peace, this project involves helping organise a community-lead festival in Boston, Massachusetts.

WHAT WILL I BE DOING ON THIS PROJECT?

The Wake Up the Earth Festival takes place on the first Saturday of May every year. The festival was held for the first time 42 years ago, celebrating the stopping of a highway being built through a section of Boston. Since then, this festival is used to raise awareness about climate change and other political issues.
Yourself and the other international volunteers will join the festival's committee and their efforts to publicise the event. You will help prepare signs, banners, costumes, decorations and children's activities. As well as helping the festival run smoothly, you will be involved with breakdown, clean up and evaluation of the event. This project is ideal for those who enjoy arts and culture events.

WHERE WILL I BE STAYING?

Jamaica Plain is a neighborhood in Boston, Massachusetts. Jamaica Plain, or "JP" as the locals call it, is a classic "streetcar suburb" that has evolved into one of Boston's most diverse and dynamic neighborhoods. The ethnically diverse area is home to a large Latino community & growing LGBT+ community.

Boston itself is a popular city in the northeast of the US known for its history, universities, sports teams, and easy access to New York City.

You will be staying in a pair with a local family close to the festival. Volunteers will take turns cooking lunch and dinner for the group and some meals will be provided from community members or restaurants.

WHAT ABOUT LEISURE TIME?

There will be opportunities to explore the city during free time and engage with the community. During your free time you can use the subway to explore the city, as well as travel to New York City.
