Hosted by our Spanish partner SVI, this project is focused on helping protect an endangered species of bird.

WHAT WILL I BE DOING ON THIS PROJECT?

The Aula de Educación Ambiental (Center for Environmental Education) is a centre created by the Department of Education and Citizen Participation in Pozuelo de Alarcón, which offers free activities related to sustainability.

The main objective of this project is to help the bird species, the Lesser Kestrel, as they are classified as endangered. The Lesser Kestrel populations dropped hugely between 1970s to 1990s. You will be helping care for and then release of a colony of these Kestrels.
You will be building Hack Boxes where birds can safely relax, as well as perches and birdbaths. In addition, all volunteers will help improve the centre for the general public to visit. Tasks for this will include making wooden signs, installing new handrails and making the centre more accessible.

WHERE WILL I BE STAYING?

You will be staying in shared rooms in University dorms near by.

WHAT ABOUT LEISURE TIME?

When not volunteering, you will be taken on historic tours in Madrid, visit El Retiro Park and Madrid de los Austrias (The Madrid of the Habsburgs), as well as the Botanical Gardens. You will also go cycle through the Adolfo Suárez forest park as well as swim in the public pool in Pozuelo de Alarcón. There is lots to do in the local area.
