Hosted by World Friends, this volunteer project focuses on combating climate change through tree-planting.

World Friends Iceland are opening a sustainable centre called BRU in the area of Hrutafjordur which is a 36 km long fjord in Hunathing vestra. Nearby you can find a lot of pure and unspoiled nature, beaches full of driftwood, Snaefellsnes peninsula, glaciers in the highlands, waterfalls, strong rivers, canyons and craters. The purpose of the BRU centre is to protect the nature in the area and to raise the awareness about sustainability amongst visitors and volunteers which are coming to the area.

This project involves a variety of different tasks and activities. Some days will focus on renovation, painting, cleaning and fixing things around and inside BRU. You will also do some artwork for example paintings and sculptures made of driftwood. Other days, you will clean the coastline and plant trees in the area. Planting trees is one of the key parts of the this project as planting trees is an effective way to fight climate change and air pollution.

You will be staying at World Friend's Sustainable Centre. The house has 16 double rooms, two kitchens, several bathrooms and common areas as well as rooms for workshops and galleries. It has its own generator to produce electricity. Beds are provided, however, you need to bring your own sleeping bags. Wifi is available for free. You will be provided with three meals everyday but everyone is expected to do their fair share of cooking and cleaning. Please bring along your favourite recipes from home!

You will be working on your volunteer project on weekdays and will have time off to relax in the evenings and at the weekends.

World Friends will organise reasonably priced weekend excursions to some of the most popular, beautiful areas and natural wonders that Iceland has to offer. Excursions include waterfalls, volcanic and geothermal areas, glaciers, lava forests, hot-springs, rhyolite mountain ranges, steam-vents or even icebergs. The local area is also great for hiking. Every evening, volunteers from different countries will talk about the country they are from. We  encourage you to bring along some food, photos or anything interesting related to your country for a fun and informative evening with the other volunteers.
