On this project, volunteers will help ensure the successful running of a small festival hosted by the RSPCA.

WHAT WILL I BE DOING ON THIS PROJECT?

Mallydams Wood is a well established wildlife rehabilitation centre, education centre and woodland nature reserve in the South East of England, covering Kent, Sussex and Hampshire. For the last 6 years they have been involved in a community project with the aim to reach and empower local families and young people coming from disadvantaged areas in and around Hastings.

In 2020 Mallydams Wood is happy to invite and host a group of international volunteers to support this long term project by helping with the preparation and running of a local celebration and festival that will involve local families and youth.

This is project is focused on community environmental-education and outdoor-learning. After being trained by the host organisation, international volunteers will be creating sculptures and costumes as well as taking part and marshalling a local carnival event to celebrate the community outreach work that the project has achieved over the last 5 years.

WHERE WILL I BE STAYING?

Volunteers will stay in either single or double rooms. There are separate male and female bathrooms and showers. Fully equipped self-catering kitchen with fridge, oven and dishwasher. BBQ area. Internet available.

WHAT ABOUT LEISURE TIME?

Mallydams Wood owns 55 acre private woodland for the volunteers to enjoy and the Hastings Country Park Nature Reserve is a short walk away with amazing cliff tops views along the rugged coastline. There is a long stretch of beach about 1 hour walk away which is great for rockpooling and sunbathing. Mallydams Wood is near a local post office with plenty of snacks and also the village of Pett which has two good local public houses with great menus and outdoor seating. Hastings Old Town is a five minute bus ride away and is a hive of activity for artists and musicians. Hastings also has the largest shore-launched fishing fleet in Europe and fisherman still mend their nets and tend their boats under the East Hill cliffs.

Volunteers will also have the chance to get to know the local area and the nearby city of Hastings during a day trip organised by Concordia.
