Big congratulations to Amy Hunter for coming first! Congratulations as well to Barney Smith and Emily Matthews for coming second and third.
Amy spent 2 weeks in Nepal volunteering for the Total Sanitation Project and helped to build a toilet for the community. Access to proper health and sanitation facilities are often very limited among the locals and awareness of correct hygiene practices is low. Only 46% of the population has access to toilets but with the support of volunteers and the locals, there has been a significant improvement in the health and sanitation conditions and a reduction in the occurrence of sickness within the community and an improved quality of life.
Barney spent 2 weeks in Manjushri KMC, an internationally renowned centre for meditation, where everyone is welcome to enjoy the peaceful environment or join in the many programmes offered throughout the year. These projects allow volunteers to gain an insight and experience of living and working in a modern day Buddhist community, learning how to be calm and relax the mind and meet others with shared perspectives and ideas.
Emily spent 2 weeks in Belgium at an Asylum Seeker centre that accommodates unaccompanied minors who have asked for asylum in Belgium. Volunteers and residents worked together to build a barbecue area and made links of solidarity among themselves and the local community.
We would like to thank everyone who entered the photo competition. But mostly, we would like to thank each of you for volunteering with Concordia. Thank you for choosing to spend your time to support local communities and making a difference in people’s lives. We hope the memories you have created this year will stay with you forever and inspire others to join the volunteering movement around the world.
