INTERNATIONAL VOLUNTEER PROJECT OF THE WEEK

Dejavato - Elephant Project“The question is, are we happy to suppose that our grandchildren may never be able to see an elephant except in a picture book?”

David Attenborough

Currently in conflict, elephants and humans have a hard time living together in Indonesia as elephants are being squeezed into increasingly small areas. The local farmers are taking more land to plant crops, reducing the elephant’s natural habitats. As a result, the elephants frequently raid and destroy the crops which causes this conflict between humans and elephants. Due to this reason, the local government and a wildlife organisation are working together to conserve the elephants and reduce the conflict.

This project is based at the Elephant Conservation Centre, Lampung in Way Kambas National Park.

The volunteers work will consist of a variety of tasks including bathing/showering, feeding and checking the health of the elephants.

Llogara Pass - Albania

“Nature surrounds us, from parks and backyards to streets and alleyways. Next time you go out for a walk, tread gently and remember that we are both inhabitants and stewards of nature in our neighbourhoods.”
David Suzuki

This project will take place in Llogora National Park that is located about 40 km south-east of the city of Vlora on the border area between the Adriatic and the Ionian sea. For centuries, this spectacular mountain range has almost completely isolated this part of the coast from the rest of the country.

The volunteers’ work will consist in cleaning and maintenance of the park’s trails, providing information to the tourists, or raising awareness of the rules of the park. Additionally, volunteers will create recreational and social activities with children with special needs that will be guest in the park for 2 days.

bread making festivalPeace goes into the making of a poem as flour goes into the making of bread.

Pablo Neruda

One of the biggest events is festival “Bread Making” aimed to plant and harvest wheat as it was used 100 years ago in Ukraine; instruments and technologies from times when the Earth was not harmed by industrialisation.

The main idea is promoting environmentally-friendly lifestyle as the most beneficial, show people different aspects of sustainable development such as permaculture, organic farming, healthy eating etc. Visitors will harvest, reap and mill wheat with simple tools, bake bread in stove, helping at many master-classes, learn traditional ceremonies and songs of bread making.

This is a real feast of labour and art, harvest and learning.

“I don’t understand the notion that modern farming is anything do to with nature. It’s a pretty gross interference with nature.”

Peter Singer

How about getting closer to nature? Helping farmers on their way to be more “eco-firendly” in their work’s methods. You will also help local farmers improve they way of farming by helping them in their fields (removing plants, making a canal water) . The goal is to increase the productivity of a land without increasing its surface.

And how about doing all of this this in one of the most beautiful and peaceful place of the world?

After each performance, you shall head off on our caravan with your donkeys to the next one!
